Department Profile
English
Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya
The Department of English of this college started in 1968, the year in which the college was established. The department conducts Undergraduate courses and is affiliated under the West Bengal State University. The Department of English offers a wide range of literary texts from across time periods and spatial locations. It plays a pivotal role within the institutional framework. Classrooms are spaces where students express their views on prevailing societal issues. They critically engage with texts, literary traditions and historical narratives.

It follows the CBCS method and aims at making English interesting to both honours and general students. The syllabus incorporates Alternative English, Elective English, AECC English and LCC English apart from Honours. The Department of English uses innovative methods of teaching like PPT, showing relevant films, organizing debates, students' seminars, quizzes, staging plays, cultural programmes etc to make students interested in the curriculum and feel involved.

Vision
The Department has a vision to make English interesting to all students and make them understand how the language is important not only as a means of communication but also as an international language. Students should spontaneously participate in classroom activities to develop their speaking skills too. The department wishes to encourage such an interactive environment for their students.

Mission
The overall mission of the English Department is to promote literacy — specifically the ability to read, write, and think critically. This mission includes the fostering of such technological literacy as information retrieval, research, and communication. Literate individuals can gather, analyse, and communicate information effectively.
